The Bedtime Battle Zone

"Will my toddler sleep better in a big kid bed?"

"How do I get her to STAY in her room after bedtime?"

"Why does he suddenly need me to lie with him for an hour before he'll fall asleep?"

If you've ever been held hostage in your child's room waiting for them to fall asleep, you know this phase can be intense. Welcome to toddler and preschooler sleep—where newfound independence meets BIG emotions, boundary-testing meets monsters under the bed, and "five more minutes!" becomes the nightly rallying cry.

Here's the truth: Bedtime battles don't help anyone sleep better. They just leave everyone exhausted and frustrated. We can help you find a better way—one that brings peace to bedtime instead of chaos.

Sleep struggles at this age aren't a reflection of your parenting. Toddlers and preschoolers are working through major developmental tasks—learning autonomy, testing boundaries, processing fears, navigating big feelings. All of this can show up at bedtime.

What You Actually Need to Know About Toddler & Preschool Sleep ~

Sleep is not something we can force. It's a natural biological process that happens when children are tired, feel safe, and can let go.

At this age, most children need 10-12 hours of sleep at night for healthy development, executive function, mood regulation, and immune function. Many toddlers still need a nap (1-3 hours), though most will drop the nap somewhere between 3-4 years old. Once the nap drops, protecting nighttime sleep becomes even more important.

Here's what's happening developmentally:

Toddlers are working on autonomy and control. They want to make their own decisions (even about sleep). This is healthy development—but it can make bedtime feel like a power struggle if we're not careful.

Preschoolers are developing active imaginations and awareness of the world around them. This means fears can emerge—fear of the dark, monsters, being alone, separation from parents. These fears are real to them, even if they seem irrational to us.

Both ages are learning to regulate their emotions and bodies. But their nervous systems are still developing, which means big meltdowns, hyperactivity before bed (the "second wind"), and difficulty calming down without co-regulation from a trusted adult.

This is why routines, connection, and emotional security matter so much at this age. When children feel safe, their bodies and minds can relax. When they know what to expect, they feel grounded and in control.

How I Work with Families

I meet you where you are—zero judgment, zero pressure to follow rigid schedules that don't match newborn biology.

The goal in these early months isn't to "fix" your baby's sleep (nothing is broken).

The goal instead is to:

  • Build Realistic Expectations

Understanding what's developmentally normal takes so much pressure off. When you know your baby isn't "supposed" to sleep through the night yet, you can stop blaming yourself.

  • Establish Gentle Rhythms

We can't force a schedule, but we can create a flow to your days that supports your family and your baby’s development.

  • Create a foundation for healthy sleep habits.

The choices you make now set the stage for smoother sleep as your baby develops. We focus on what matters: safe sleep, establishing a daily rhythm, connection, and protecting your own rest.

  • Support You

Newborn sleep coaching is as much about the parents as it is about the baby. We address your stress, your recovery, your nervous system regulation, and how to get the support you need to survive this phase.

You Don't Have to Do This Alone

Toddler and preschooler sleep can feel chaotic. One week they're sleeping great, the next week they're sneaking into your room at 2am every night. It's exhausting and confusing—but you're not alone in this.

Give yourself some grace. You're navigating one of the most intense developmental periods with patience and love, even when you're running on fumes.

Small changes to routines, boundaries, and how you support their emotional security can make a real difference. And having someone who understands both the science and the struggle? That changes everything.
